Ain’t it the Gospel Truth

The Nightmare is Over – the computer is up and running
Jan 6th
It took a long time – the final bit being the RAM.
The problem, not faulty RAM but a slightly bent CPU pin. Carefully bending it back fixed the problem.
Feels so good.

The Human Element
Dec 2nd

Well I just uploaded a brand new spanking theme and now I’m going to celebrate it with a little bit of blogging. Truth be told, I really neglected this site for a while while I did a lot of other things including getting Simply Cooking With Sue and continuing to work on FilmmakerIQ. Although I’ve been crazy busy, it’s always good to keep a bit of the blog going just to practice a little writing and to get out some thoughts out there.
So in celebration of a brand new look and site, I thought I would start out by writing a little something about the Human Element.
DOW Chemical’s had an advertising campaign talking about the importance of the human element – that rather predictable yet amazing thing that can make or break projects. It’s a nice campaign although the cynic inside me questions whether a corporation like DOW really believes that. I’ve worked with and seen companies that treated people like cogs in a machine – taking that Ford assembly line approach to modern business.

It just don’t work.
And quite frankly I myself was taking that viewpoint toward my work and the musical groups I play with. I seem to be under the impression that any person, so long as they claimed to wear a certain hat, could fit into the role and perform as expected.
I know it sounds stupid as I type this out, but the truth of the matter is I simply didn’t value the “human element” as much as I should.
Going back to my days at Der Greenestag… they had a nasty practice of “hiring” interns to perform a lot of crucial functions. Interns would always be in and out working on different events. And when it came down to the actual event date and there was a problem, the first question always was, “Where’s that intern, it’s his job to do XYZ”.
Cogs – non-individual workers who aren’t given responsibility nor any expectation of success. Just another nameless and faceless person to perform a repetitive and mundane task.
DMV workers essentially.
But that’s certainly not what a modern business needs. A creative endeavor, like what I’m trying to do, needs that human element.
The fact of the matter is: One person is not the same as another. Each person brings a whole host of plus and minus to the game. And if you start taking the attitude of having “interchangeable personnel” – well then the whole thing is going down in smoke.

A Small Victory… but VICTORY nonetheless
May 17th
So I’ve been trying to upgrade my Matrox Rtx2 to something with more muscle – the Matrox Axio LE. Well I ordered the wrong card (I got the PCI-X card) and I sent it back to B&H to get the PCI-e version.
Well in the process, I had to replace the motherboard so it could accept another PCI-e 4x card. Well when rebuilding the motherboard I think I friend my RAID controller.
So I went and bought another one – a cheapy generic RAID card for $20. Then I read that RAID controllers are very picky and the data may not be viewable with other RAID controllers… that freaked me out. First I hated to waste $20… I’ve spent enough money… and secondly – a Siig Raid Controller was going to cost me a whopping $58!!! And honestly the original Siig card was pretty much a cheapie – it wasn’t anything special.
Well I read some more about the generic card and it said it had a SiliconImage chipset – the same kind as the original Siig card I had. So I crossed my fingers and waited for the generic RAID controller to arrive.
Today – after all my concerts, there it was: the box with the generic card. I unwrapped it and popped it in, knowing that even if it was compatible I had a 50/50 chance of the card not recognizing the RAIDed hard drive (because there’s two cables and they have to be in specific ports for it to work).
Well, SUCCESS!!!! The RAID drive popped up and there as my data – just like a week ago.
I set my computer to backup four critical projects in case something weird happened. It’s doing that right now…
After all the crap lately, it’s nice to have a minor victory.

New CiMG Website Up
Jan 11th

Well it took quite a while but the new website is up. It’s not as complete as I’d like it but it’s much more reflective of who I am and what I do than the old website. Now we’re focusing on Video Production. The graphics and web design is ancillary to the video.
Check out my new Creative Industries Media Group website.
Additions I’d like to make: 1. A graphic for the Delivery Services, 2. An About us page with some info about me and links to this blog, 3. More full length demo videos.
But I figured it was better to get this site out there now in it’s current state and add to it as I go along.

Demo Reel Done!
Jan 8th

Same graphic as last time. I had another one ready to go but it’s on my workstation and it’s off right now… I don’t feel like turning it on for a graphic…
Warning, it’s a 29 megabyte Flash file so it may stop and reload at times… be patient.
I’m pretty happy but it seems like everytime I make a demo reel I always look at certain shots and say, “man, I could shoot that better today.” Oh well, that’s just reality I guess.
And if anyone has been following my post about “Commercial Lighting” you’ll see a couple shots from that job.
